Your child's learning plan

Each child has a learning plan: which days of the week they have class, and how long their classes may run each day. You choose both when you add your child, and can change them in your child's Settings, under Time, behind your parent PIN. A change counts from the next class.

Class days

Under Class days, tick the days of the week your child has class: any of the seven, at least one. Weeks start on Monday. Until you choose, your child has the usual days for how many days a week they have class, four at first:

  • 1 day: Wednesday
  • 2 days: Tuesday and Thursday
  • 3 days: Monday, Wednesday and Friday
  • 4 days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
  • 5 days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
  • 6 days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday
  • 7 days: every day

Your child's page says how the week is going, like 2 of 4 days this week, with a star once they're there, and your family page says it too.

Under the plan, the settings say which days those are, how many lessons a class day holds, and about how many weeks the lessons your child has left this term take at that pace: the lessons open now on each subject's learning line, in the grade it's at, that your child hasn't finished or doesn't already know, by how long each is planned to take.

Each week's plan

Each week is planned for your child from their learning plan and where each subject's learning line is when the week begins. It plans subjects, not lessons, and isn't stored: it's worked out afresh each time, so it always follows what your child has done.

  • Lessons a class day: as many whole lessons as fit the daily limit, at least one, so that no class is cut short.
  • Which subjects: the week's lessons are shared among the subjects by how many lessons each has left at its grade, so that they finish about the same time, or with more or less of a subject as you chose (see below). Math and English get one a week at least, while they have lessons left and the week has room, and no subject comes twice in a day.
  • Which lesson: on the day, each subject takes its next lesson along its line, so a lesson taken early or a new start never leaves the plan behind.
  • A missed class day: its lessons move to the next class day, at most one a subject, first thing. Nothing piles up, and nothing carries into the next week, which is planned afresh. A lesson of a subject taken on any day counts for it.
  • A day off: nothing is planned on it (see below).
  • Your changes: a lesson you put on a day, a subject you moved to another day, or class on a rest day (see below).
  • A child added in the middle of a week has their first week from that day.

Your child's page follows the plan. Today has today's lessons, a class they paused always first, each ticked once done. On a day without class, or once today's are done, it says when the next class is and what it holds; once they're done with time left today, A bit more offers a lesson or two from the next class days. This week shows the week day by day, with a star on each day they had class. Your family page has each child's today and week: see Progress and what comes next.

More or less of a subject

In your child's Settings, beside where each subject starts, Lessons each week is Usual until you choose More or Less. A subject with More gets about twice the lessons a week it would as usual, so it comes up more often and finishes sooner; one with Less gets about half. It keeps that pace for as long as it has lessons left at its grade, rather than drifting back to the others' as it gets ahead or falls behind. Math and English still get one a week at least, and no subject comes twice in a day, so a short week may not show a difference. The settings' estimate, and each subject's weeks left on your family page, follow your choice.

Days off and holidays

A day off has nothing planned. Its lessons don't move to another day, what a missed class day owes waits for the next class day after it, and the rest of the week keeps its plan. Your child can still start any lesson in All my lessons, while they pick their own lessons (see below).

  • For one child: on your family page, and in your child's Settings under Days off and extra class, Day off today and Day off tomorrow give that child the day off, on a class day. Undo takes it back.
  • For all your children, like a school break or a trip: add a holiday on your account page, with its first and last day: up to 60 days at a time, from yesterday to a year from today. Each holiday to come is listed there, with Remove.
  • A family can have up to 50 days off and holidays to come at once.

On a day off, your child's Today says Day off today, and This week marks the day Day off. Each day off you add or take back goes into our activity log, with its days but without your child's name.

Changing a week by hand

You can change a child's week yourself, behind your parent PIN. Each change is for once only: the learning plan and each subject's learning line stay as they are.

  • A lesson on a day: in your child's lessons on the family pages, Add to a day by a lesson puts it on a day you choose, from today to the end of next week. That day, it's the lesson the plan holds for its subject, in place of the subject's next one, or one lesson more when the day doesn't have that subject. A lesson is on one day at a time, and a day has one you chose for each subject: a new one takes the old one's place. The lesson then says On and its day, with Remove to take it off. If your child finishes it before its day, that day keeps its plan.
  • A subject on another day: in Day by day, on your family page and with your child's lessons, Move by a subject planned on a day from today on moves it to another day of this week from today on, a rest day too. It then says which day it moved from, with Undo to move it back. A subject your child has done that day stays where it is. Each week is planned afresh, so a move is for this week only.
  • Class on a rest day: on your family page, and in your child's Settings under Days off and extra class, Class today and Class tomorrow give that child class on a day that isn't one of their class days. It holds as many lessons as a class day, of the subjects the next class days hold, which keep theirs. Undo takes it back.
  • A child can have up to 50 changes to come at once.

Your child's Today and This week, and Day by day on the family pages, follow your changes, with a lesson you put on a day by its title. A change the plan can no longer make, like one for a lesson that has closed since, is passed over. Each change you make or take back goes into our activity log, with its kind and days but without your child's name or the lesson.

What your child can start

Until you choose otherwise, your child picks their own lessons: their page has All my lessons, the same way as their lessons on the family pages: their curriculum, then a subject, then a grade, with every unit open. They can start any lesson there, like one further along a subject's line: once they get it, the line goes on from there (see Progress and what comes next).

Which grades they see, in each subject, is up to you: in your child's Settings, under Learning, open Grades to browse, and other curricula and choose

  • The grades each subject has reached so far: from the grade the subject's line starts in to the grade it's at;
  • Those, and the next grade of each subject: one grade further too; or
  • Every grade of each subject, lower ones too, until you choose otherwise.

Under Also open, tick any other curriculum your child may browse besides their own. It has no learning line of theirs, so its grades go by your child's grade instead: their grade, or the nearest with lessons, then the next one too or every grade, as you chose above. Their learning lines, each week's plan and Today stay in their own curriculum, and a lesson from another counts as one more, without moving a line. A subject you left out for now isn't in All my lessons.

To keep your child to their plan, untick can pick any of their lessons under Permissions, and press Save. Their page then has Today, This week and A bit more, but not All my lessons.

While the parent pages are locked, your child can start today's lessons, A bit more, a class they paused, a lesson you put on a day, and, while they pick their own lessons, any lesson in the grades and curricula they can browse; any other lesson says Let's ask a grown-up first. With the parent pages unlocked, you can still start any lesson for them, from their lessons on the family pages. A change of these settings goes into our activity log, without your child's name.

What your child can change themselves

The face at the top of your child's page opens their Me page. There, without your PIN, they can choose where each subject starts (a grade, or a unit of it, in the grades they can browse), their teacher, picture book or board, their favourite theme and the name their teacher calls them. You choose which of these they may change in their Settings, under Permissions; each is allowed until you untick it. Their curriculum, days, limits and days off, and payments and privacy, stay with you.

Each change your child makes shows under Recent changes on your family page for two weeks, like Ada moved Math to Grade 3 (was Grade 2), with Undo, which puts it back as it was. A change made again since can't be undone from the older one. We keep these changes for 90 days.

The daily limit

Until you choose another, it follows your child's grade: 30 minutes for Grades 1 to 2, 45 minutes for Grades 3 to 5, 1 hour for Grades 6 to 8 and 90 minutes for Grades 9 to 12. You can choose from 15 minutes to 4 hours a day.

  • What each class runs on its class clock counts toward it, as for the time limit. A class under a minute, or one that went wrong on our side, doesn't count.
  • A day runs from midnight to midnight in your family's time zone: the one your browser was in when you signed up (Pacific time for families who joined before), which you can change on your account page. Class hours stay in Pacific time.
  • A class needs 5 minutes left to start, and runs no longer than what's left: then the teacher wraps up kindly, and your child's place is saved.
  • If the limit is shorter than a lesson, your child can still do one lesson a day: the day's first lesson may run its whole length.
  • A lesson started from your child's lessons that's longer than the time left says so first: Today's time is enough for part of it. It will stop in the middle, and you'll carry on next time. Your child can go ahead or go back.
  • Your child's page says what's left, like 25 minutes left today, and its Today offers only the lessons that fit, of those the day's plan holds, then says which comes next time. Once it's used up, it says That's all your class time for today, to come back tomorrow, which lesson comes next time, and that a grown-up can add more time. Your family page says No class time left today.

The limit counts whether classes are free or not. When we count class time, a class runs for whichever is shorter: your family's class time, or your child's time left today.

20 more minutes today

On your family page, each child has a 20 more minutes today button. One tap gives that child 20 more minutes, for today only, without changing their daily limit. Tap again for more, up to 4 hours in a day. A class that's already running keeps the time it started with, so the extra minutes are for the next class. Each tap goes into our activity log, without your child's name.
