How voice classes work

Version: 2026-11-03

Draft: pending review by a lawyer.

Please read this before allowing voice classes. You decide for each child and can change your mind at any time.

The teacher is an AI

Your child talks out loud with an AI teacher, not a person, and no one listens in. If your child asks, the teacher says plainly that it's an AI. It may not say so otherwise, so please tell your child before their first class. It can make mistakes.

Where your child's voice goes

Class turns on the microphone; the camera stays off. As your child speaks, their voice travels, encrypted, to LiveKit, which connects the classroom and runs our teacher program, and to an AI voice model that listens, turns speech into text and answers: xAI's Grok, or Alibaba Cloud's Qwen in Singapore, whichever we run classes on at the time. Or the class runs in three parts: xAI's speech recognition turns your child's speech into text, Anthropic's Claude reads it and writes the teacher's answer, and xAI's voice speaks it; Claude gets the words as text, never the voice. This happens live and can happen outside Canada, including in the United States and Singapore. To teach, the AI is also given your child's first name or nickname, grade, favourite theme and where they left off.

What is kept, and what isn't

  • We don't record the sound of classes or keep a full transcript.
  • xAI's published policy says it keeps what it receives, which can include your child's voice and words, for 30 days to check for misuse, then deletes it unless the law or an investigation requires longer. Alibaba Cloud's says it keeps what it receives for no longer than 30 days unless the law or security requires longer. Both say they don't train on this data without the customer's permission. Anthropic's says it deletes what it receives (on classes run with Claude, your child's words as text) within 30 days unless its usage policy or the law requires longer, and its terms say it may not train models on it. LiveKit says it doesn't keep live audio.
  • We keep your child's progress, answers and a few of their own words, like an idea they explained, for your reports. Our database is in Canada.

If your child may be unsafe

If your child says something suggesting they may be hurt or unsafe, the teacher answers kindly, pointing them to a grown-up they trust and to 911, and the screen shows Kids Help Phone. We keep what was said around that moment, up to 20 lines, so a person on our team can follow up. We may contact you, and where the law requires, report to child protection services.

You're in charge

Your child can turn the microphone off or leave a class at any time. You can stop voice classes for a child on the Privacy and consents page; it applies from the next class. Removing a child deletes their profile, progress and reports. The Privacy Policy has the details. Questions: [email address to come].
