Terms of Service

Version: 2026-10-28

Draft: pending review by a lawyer.

These terms are an agreement between you and [name to come] ("we" or "us"), which runs My Family School. They cover using My Family School and buying class time. Please read them together with our Privacy Policy and How voice classes work, which explain what happens to your family's information.

My Family School in short

My Family School gives children live, spoken, one-to-one lessons with an AI teacher in the browser, following the curriculum a parent chooses for each child: the BC curriculum, or the first lessons of the US Common Core and NGSS or of Cambridge Primary. There are lessons for some grades from 1 to 4, listed on our course pages, and classes are in English. A parent creates the family account, adds each child, and gets a short report after every lesson.

Who can use it

  • You must be an adult (the age of majority where you live) and the parent or legal guardian of each child you add.
  • My Family School is open to the families we invite, wherever using it isn't prohibited by law.
  • Class hours aren't available where selling them is prohibited by law.
  • Children don't get their own accounts. They use My Family School through yours.
  • A family can add up to six children.

Classes and class time

For now, classes are free. We don't ask for payment details, and nothing is ever charged unless a parent buys class hours and pays for them, or turns on automatic top-up, as "Buying class time" and "Automatic top-up" below explain.

We may count each family's class time. When we do, a new family starts with any free class time we offer new families for a first class (our pricing page says how much, if any; once per family, and it doesn't expire), and otherwise with none, until it buys class hours or our team adds some. A class needs at least 5 minutes of it to start and uses the time on its class clock, which stops at your child's last word or tap if they walk away; a class under a minute, or one that goes wrong on our side, uses none. If time runs out during a class, the teacher wraps up and your child's place is saved. When it's used up, new classes wait until there's more. While we count class time, up to three children in a family can be in class at once.

My Family School is new. Features may change, and we may pause the service or stop offering classes. If we stop, we'll tell you by email and explain what happens to your family's information and to any class hours you haven't used.

Buying class time

When class hours are on sale, a parent can buy them in packs on the family's class time page. Buying always needs your parent PIN. Payments are handled by Stripe, our payment provider, on its own pages: we never see or keep your card number.

  • Prices. Our pricing page lists the packs and what each costs, in US dollars, before tax. Any tax is worked out from your billing address at checkout. Stripe's checkout page shows the total, with any tax, before you pay, and you must agree to these terms there.
  • What a pack gives. Each pack gives your family the hours of class time it states, shared by all your children and used as "Classes and class time" describes. Class hours you buy don't expire. Classes use the time that expires first.
  • No subscription. Each pack is a single payment. Nothing renews, and we charge your card only when you buy a pack, or when automatic top-up buys one for you after you turned it on.
  • Price changes. We may change what packs cost. A change never affects class hours you've already bought, and automatic top-up doesn't buy a pack at a new price until you've agreed to it.
  • Receipts. Stripe emails a receipt for each payment, and the class time page lists your purchases, each with its receipt.

Automatic top-up

Automatic top-up is off unless you turn it on. To turn it on, on the class time page with your parent PIN, you save a card with Stripe (we keep only its brand and last four digits), choose an amount of class time, a pack and a monthly limit in US dollars (from $10 to $1,000), and agree to the words shown there, which we keep with the date and time. Then:

  • When it buys. Each time a class leaves your family's class time below the amount you chose, we charge the saved card for the pack you chose, at its price, plus any tax, without asking you each time. Each top-up is a purchase of a pack under these terms, with its own receipt, and its class hours are added as soon as it's paid.
  • The monthly limit. All automatic top-ups in a calendar month (in your family's time zone) together stay within your monthly limit, and only one is in progress at a time. When the next one wouldn't fit, none is bought until the next month; the class time page and the family page say so.
  • If a payment fails. If your card is declined, the class time page and the family page say so, and we try again the next time a class leaves your family's class time low. After two failures in a row, automatic top-up turns off until you turn it on again.
  • While a top-up is on its way. A class may run up to 10 minutes past zero class time, and that time is taken from the class hours the top-up buys (or, if it fails, from your next class hours).
  • Changing or stopping it. You can change the settings, which asks you to agree again, or turn automatic top-up off at any time on the class time page. Turning it off takes effect at once. A top-up already paid is a purchase like any other, and "Refunds" applies to it.

Each child can also have a monthly limit of class hours, which you set on the class time page (there's none unless you set one). Once a child's is used, no new class starts for them until the next month, and a class that's running stops when it's reached.

Refunds

  • Class hours aren't refundable, except as this section says or where the law requires it. For example, if you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you may cancel a purchase within 14 days of buying it; if you use class hours in that time, we may keep the part of the payment for the hours you used.
  • If we stop. If we stop offering classes, we refund the class hours you bought and haven't used.
  • Classes that go wrong. A class that goes wrong on our side uses no class time. If a problem on our side cost your children class time, we make it up in class time, not money.
  • Charges in error. If you were charged twice for the same thing, or charged by mistake, we refund it in full.
  • How refunds work. Write to us at [email address to come] from your account's email address. We refund to the card you paid with; it usually shows on your statement 5 to 10 business days later. A refund takes back the class time it paid for, as far as it hasn't been used.

Chargebacks

If you think a charge is wrong, please write to us first: we can usually put it right quickly. If you dispute a charge with your bank instead, we pause your family's new classes and purchases while the dispute is open (a class already running carries on), and we may give your bank our records of the payment, such as your agreement to these terms and your family's classes. If the dispute goes our way, the pause ends. If it goes your way, the class time that payment gave is taken back, and your family's classes stay paused until we've talked with you.

What My Family School is, and isn't

  • The teacher is an AI, not a person. It can misunderstand your child, make mistakes or say something that isn't quite right. No person listens in on classes.
  • It says it's an AI when asked. If your child asks, the teacher says plainly that it's an AI. It may not say so unless asked, so we suggest you tell your child before their first class.
  • It isn't an accredited school. My Family School is a learning program that follows the curriculum you choose for each child. It is not an accredited school, it doesn't give report-card marks or school credits, and it doesn't replace your child's school or teacher.
  • Lessons are drafts. They are written with help from AI and stay drafts until a certified teacher reviews them. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.
  • It isn't an emergency or counselling service. If a child is in danger, call 911.

Voice classes

  • Before a child's first voice class, a parent must read How voice classes work and allow voice classes for that child. You can stop them at any time on the Privacy and consents page.
  • Classes use the microphone. The camera is never turned on.
  • Each class has a time limit. When it's reached before the lesson is done, the teacher wraps up and your child's place is saved; you get the report when the lesson is finished. Your child can also pause and leave, and pick up later where they left off.
  • Each child has a learning plan: how many days a week they aim to have class, and a daily limit for class time (30 minutes up to Grade 2, 45 for Grades 3 to 5, 60 for Grades 6 to 8 and 90 from Grade 9, until you choose another in the child's settings). What a class runs on its class clock counts toward the day's limit, except a class under a minute or one that goes wrong on our side; days follow Pacific time (Vancouver). A class needs 5 minutes of the day's time left to start and runs no longer than what's left, but if the limit is shorter than a lesson, the day's first lesson can still run its length. When the day's time is used up, classes start again the next day, or you can give your child 20 more minutes for that day from the family page. The limit applies whether or not we count class time; when we do, a class runs for whichever is shorter, your family's class time or your child's time left that day.
  • If your child stops talking and stops using the board for a few minutes (a little longer when they're working on their own), the teacher checks in, then says goodbye and saves their place. The class ends there, and the minutes after your child's last word or tap don't count as class time.
  • A child can be in one class at a time.
  • We may limit the hours when classes can start, how many classes can run at once, and how much class time (or spending on classes) is available each day, or pause new classes for everyone, for example to fix a problem. If the classroom is full, please try again in a few minutes; once the day's limit is used up, classes start again the next day. If an urgent safety alert isn't looked at in time, new classes may pause automatically until our team turns them back on.

Your part

  • Keep your password and your parent PIN to yourself, and sign out on shared devices. Your children use My Family School on your signed-in account; the 4-digit parent PIN keeps them out of the grown-up pages (reports, settings, privacy choices, purchases and payments, and the account), so please don't share it with them.
  • Choices about consent, voice classes, purchases and payments (automatic top-up included), removing a child and deleting the account are for grown-ups. Please make them yourself, not your child.
  • Give accurate information when you add a child.
  • Stay nearby during classes when you can, especially the first few.
  • Tell us right away at [email address to come] if you think someone else has used your account.

Fair use

Please don't:

  • share your invitation or invite code with people we didn't invite;
  • let anyone other than your own children take classes on your account;
  • pay with a card you aren't allowed to use;
  • try to make the AI teacher say harmful or inappropriate things, or to get around its rules;
  • copy, scrape, resell or reverse-engineer My Family School, or try to overload, attack or break into it;
  • use My Family School to break the law or to harm anyone.

Safety

If your child says something that suggests they may be hurt or unsafe, the teacher responds with set, kind words that point them to a grown-up they trust and to 911, and the screen shows how to reach Kids Help Phone. A person on our team then reads what was said around that moment. We may contact you. If we believe a child may need protection, BC law requires us to report it to child protection services, and we will, without telling you first if that could put the child at risk. The Privacy Policy explains what we keep and for how long.

Your family's information

How we handle personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy and How voice classes work. In short: we don't show ads or sell information, our database is in Canada, and parts of every class, and payments, are handled outside Canada by our providers, which can include the United States.

We don't claim ownership of what your child says or of your reports. We use them only to run My Family School as those documents describe.

Our content

My Family School's lessons, pictures, teacher characters, voices and software belong to [name to come] or to those who license them to us. While you have an account, you may use them for your own children's learning. Please don't copy, share or sell them beyond that.

How we contact you

We'll write to the email address on your account about your account, your purchases, these terms and our service, and, when needed, about your child's safety. Stripe also emails your receipts to that address. Please make sure it's an address you check, and tell us if it changes.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll give them a new version date, tell you what changed, and ask you to agree again. Until you do, classes stay off, though you can still see your children's progress and reports. If you'd rather not agree, you can delete your account, as "Ending" explains. Fixing a typo doesn't change the date.

Ending

  • You can stop at any time. Stop voice classes for a child, remove a child, or delete your account from your account page. Classes stop at once, and the account is deleted 7 days later, as the Privacy Policy explains; until then you can change your mind. You can also email [email address to come] and we'll delete it within 30 days.
  • Class time left, class hours you bought included, ends when the account is deleted, with refunds only as "Refunds" says. Automatic top-up stops as soon as you ask to delete the account.
  • We may pause or close an account that breaks these terms, or when we need to in order to protect a child. Where it's safe to, we'll tell you why.
  • If you or we end your account, the parts of these terms about our content, refunds, limits on responsibility and the law that applies keep applying.

No promises about results

We try hard to make My Family School helpful and safe, but we provide it as it is and as available. We can't promise that it will always work, be free of mistakes, or improve your child's learning.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under laws that can't be changed by agreement, including consumer protection laws.

Limits on our responsibility

As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for indirect losses, such as lost time, and our total responsibility for any claim is limited to US$100 or, if more, what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. These limits don't apply where the law doesn't allow them, or to harm we cause on purpose or through gross negligence.

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute about them goes to the courts of British Columbia.
