Your child's first class
Before the first class:
- Allow voice classes for your child: you tick this when you add them, and your family page asks for any child whose voice classes are still to allow. See Consents and voice classes.
- Tell your child that their teacher is an AI, not a person. If your child asks, the teacher says so plainly, but it may not say so otherwise.
- Find a quiet place, and a computer or tablet with a microphone: see Devices and sound.
Your family page's Getting started list shows what's left: adding a child, class time (while we count it, a new family's first class may be on us: see Pricing), and handing over.
Then, on your family page, press Hand over to your child; the first time, you choose your parent PIN first. The parent pages lock, and your child's own page opens with Today: the lessons their week's plan holds for today (see Your child's learning plan). On a day without class it says when the next class is, and while they pick their own lessons, your child can still start any lesson from All my lessons. Your child presses Start on one.
In the classroom, your child taps Tap to hear the bell and says whether they heard it. The first time on a device they also check the microphone: they press Turn on the microphone, a grown-up may need to tap Allow, and they say "Hello, teacher!" until the bar moves. If the microphone doesn't turn on, see The microphone check. Then they press Walk into class, and their teacher joins them.
Please stay nearby, especially for the first few classes: younger children do best with a grown-up close. In class, Mic on and Mic off turn the microphone on and off, and Pause & leave ends the class with your child's place saved. The timer at the top, like ⏱ 7 / 25 min, shows the minutes the class has been going next to how long the lesson usually takes; it's only a guide, and the class carries on past it.
If something still stands in the way of your child's classes, their page says what, plainly, with a button for a grown-up, such as Grown-up: open classes. It asks for your PIN, shows what to do and lets you do it there, then hands back to your child.
After each lesson your child finishes, you get a short report: see Reading a report.
